Cal Abel is a Nuclear and Radiological Engineering PhD Candidate at Georgia Institute of Technology. He has a Masters and Bachelors of Science degree in nuclear engineering and Bachelor of Naval Science from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He served 10 years in the United States Navy working on submarines with responsibilities ranging from directing the quality assurance program to being the chief engineer. Like Mort, Cal found a common calling with energy development and the belief that effective social and governmental policy could advance more quickly with the ability to try them out on a smaller scale, i.e. the governmental start-up. Cal hold a United States patent providing for the generation of coal-to-liquid fuels using nuclear energy as the heat source.
